lyrics

I looked to my father to learn how I should be.
Saw him work so hard, knew that was gonna be me.
I learned to love to lift and carry, hustle and sweat.
money I earned was the sweetest I could get.

At first I worked for a mean old man,
the kind who uses every means that he can
to judge, deride and ridicule,
but the money wasn’t bad so I kept working like a mule.

I was a wage slave, workin’ for my pay
I was a wage slave, slavin’ every day
I was a wage slave, workin’ my life away
I lived paycheck to paycheck ‘cause I knew no other way

I had a boss as rude to his customers as can be.
I got myself a truck and his customers came with me.
I was my own boss at last, at last I was free.
In our new condo, my wife and I started a family.

My business went south with the real estate bubble
and me and my family were in deep, deep trouble
but I was lucky and a company hired me.
I’ve worked there twenty years, I guess this is it for me.

I am a wage slave, etc

Too old to do my job no more, too old to get hired
Time for me to retire now, before I get fired
Got some retirement money, some Social Security
I guess things won’t be too awful bad for my wife and me

Still it will be strange not to be working every day
Up before the dawn to go out and earn my pay
Looking back is all a blur, I don’t know where life went
I can’t help wondering if it could been better spent …

Wage slave, working just for pay
Wage slave, spending every day
Wage slave, worked my life away
Maybe I just never realized there could be some other way.
